Run in-depth low-level analyses of any SWF applet with Adobe's latest tool
Adobe SWF Investigator is an open-source Adobe AIR-based suite of tools which can provide you with a host of information about any SWF applet. It's mostly targeted at web developers, but may also be useful for security researchers and other expert Windows users.
To use the program, open the File menu, and choose the option to either open a local SWF file, or provide the link to an online applet. Then just browse the various tabs to find out more about your chosen file. A Disassembler shows you the original ActionScript 2 or 3 code; the Hex Editor shows raw file details; the Navigator helps you to browse the packages and classes in an ActionScript 3.0 applet; the Strings tab lists embedded strings within ActionScript 3.0 projects, and so on.
SWF Investigator isn't just about passively reporting on a file, though. The Hex Editor allows you to edit your file. The Viewer can be used to load and display your applet in different HTML configurations, and with custom FlashVars and allowScriptAccess settings. And the Inspector goes further still, particularly with ActionScript 3.0 code, as it works something like a debugging tool: you can retrieve data values, modify them to suit your needs and call functions as necessary.
And the Utilities menu provides even more advanced functionality: a binary editor, basic ActionScript 3.0 compiler, a fuzzer to test for common XSS vulnerabilities, even a mini web server.
None of this is presented too smartly, but then it is the first release. There's no shortage of SWF-investigating power, though, and if you've even needed to know more about what a Flash applet is doing then SWF Investigator will be extremely useful.
This new version "adds support for new SWF tags and contains bug fixes."

A professional level web editor which remains easy to use
When designing a web site, it is important to choose to work with software that will enable you to achieve the results you are looking for, but at the same time matches your level of ability. Opt for something too basic and you'll find that your creativity is limited; choose something too complicated and you may not be able to produce anything at all.
Freeway aims to strike a balance between ease of use and capabilities. The application allows for the creation of stunning web sites without the need to know a single line of HTML, CSS or any other web language. There are a wide range of templates to choose from and creating a site can be as simple as dragging page elements into place.
Sites created in Freeway can be extended through the use of plugins. Freeway Actions are hugely versatile plugins that can be used to run server-side applications, JavaScript effects and much more. All of the Actions that are available are compatible with Freeway Pro, and many are also compatible with Freeway Express.
Freeway includes a range of new features from previous versions, including gallery and slideshow creation, improved FTP support and easy creation of a site search tool. Freeway Express is a cut down version of Freeway Pro, but it is still an impressive tool that is well worth a look.
Verdict
Powerful and extendable, Freeway provides everything you need to create a personal or business web site.

Create, edit and convert images from the command line
ImageMagick is a collection of mostly command-line based tools that allow you to view, convert and edit graphics files.
At the simplest you might just use a command like "convert image.jpg image.png" to convert an image from one format to another.
But the program can also manipulate images (resize, rotate, crop or flip) add shapes or text, apply special effects, create animated GIFs from a sequence of images, create composite images, montages, and much more.
If you're used to regular Windows photo editors then the idea of working with images from the command line will seem a little odd, but the technique does have its advantages. Once you have the command to carry out some complex operation, like, say, convert a flat 2D label into a 3D object with the texture and colour that you need, then you can repeat it whenever you like on other images and achieve the same results, almost instantly.
Or, if you're a programmer, then you can call ImageMagick from your projects to create and modify images as and when you require. The program works just about anywhere, thanks to a host of interfaces that may be used via .NET, C++, PHP, Perl, Ruby, Java, COM+ and more. And ImageMagick is an open source project, so you're free to use, copy, modify or distribute it with your own software, however you like.

Decompile/ edit/ extract resources from Flash SWFs
JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler is an open source tool for decompiling Flash SWF files, extracting, editing or replacing their contents.
At a minimum you might use the program to grab images, videos or music from an SWF.
You could also tweak an applet, perhaps replacing a background image or the soundtrack. Flash developers might explore scripts to better understand how an applet works, or security experts can analyse a malicious applet to figure out what it's doing.
Whatever you're doing, the program is reasonably easy to use. There's no installation, and it's Java-based, so works almost anywhere: just open your applet and its various resources are displayed in a tree: shapes, sprites, buttons, fonts, frames, scripts and more. Expand a section like Sounds, then browse their contents, and right-click an item to view, remove, replace, export it and more.
JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler has plenty of other higher level functions. If you can't find an SWF file, it's able to search your browser cache, or even its RAM. And whatever you locate may be exported as a stand-alone EXE file, for easy playing on the Windows desktop.
Verdict
JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler is a powerful application with a stack of essential features, yet remains accessible - and very useable - to non-developers.

The Express editions are free, cut down versions of Microsoft's flagship programming environment, Visual Studio. Don't let the phrase "cut down" put you off, though: while there are high-end features missing, these tools provide everything you need to create powerful Windows, web and database applications.
This ISO file contains the four main Express editions.
Visual Studio 2010 Express offers the simplest starting point for novice developers, with many useful template forms to help populate your projects ("Explorer", "Login", "Splash Screen", "About Box" and more), IntelliSense filtering, and the ability to easily create Windows Presentation Framework (WPF) applications without XAML coding.
Visual C# has a little less hand holding - fewer forms, no Intellisense filtering - but is otherwise straightforward to use, and includes a new code editor, basic XML editor and multi-monitor support.
Visual C++ is targeted at the most expert audience. There are no canned Windows forms here, but it's the only one of the Express editions that's capable of creating native win32 applications, for instance.
And Visual Web Developer lets you create everything from individual web applications (which can be deployed with the new One Click Publish feature) to complete ASP.NET web sites with web application support. And a new Designer makes it easier than ever to build stunning Silverlight applications for your site.
What's new? A redesigned Start page leads you into the program more quickly, and a new "Basic Settings" option then makes Visual Studio easier to use by hiding advanced, less frequently used features (see Tools > Settings).
The streamlining continues, as we've mentioned, with an attractive new editor that can now help you create WPF code (and multi-monitor support makes it easier to track large projects, no matter what you're doing).
The real value comes in the many language and .NET framework improvements, though. These include strong support for parallel programming to help you better exploit multi-core CPUs, ASP.NET improvements that make it easier to create powerful web forms, and many WPF-based interface additions, including ribbon controls, taskbar extensibility and support for Windows 7 multi-touch.
Please note that the download is an ISO disc image, and you'll need to burn it to a DVD before it can be used. Microsoft also recommend that you uninstall any previous beta of Visual Studio 2010 Express before you try to install this one.
Verdict
An essential upgrade to the most powerful programming environment around. If you've any interest in software development then you need this
